Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,350m)

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, we will be greeted by a representative of Sisne Rover who will drop us off at our hotel. We then check-in at the hotel, freshen up and take  rest. Welcome dinner will be served. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 02: Kathmandu- Trek Preparation & free time.

On your first day in Kathmandu, we take rest after a long flight from your home country. After breakfast, you can visit around Thamel (where your hotel will be located) and shop few items that you have missed to bring with you.We can add Kathmandu Valley Sightseeing tour on your request. We can have a tour to UNESCO World heritage sites – Durbar Square, Pashupatinath temple, Swayambhunath stupa and Bouddhanath stupa. In the afternoon, we will have a meeting with our fellow participants and check the final preparation for the trek. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 03: KTM - Lukla- Phakding ( 2651m ) : 4-5 hrs

We will take a early flight to Lukla ( 40 minutes ) from where the Everest Trek begins. In Lukla will meet rest of the team and start the trek. We gradually descend to Cheplung village from where we get a glimpse of Mt Khumbila, a sacred mountain which has never been. We walk on a trail that gradually descends to Cheplung village from where we get a glimpse of Mt. Khumbila, a sacred mountain which has never been climbed.The trail again gradually descend until  Phakding. Overnight in Phakding.

Day 04: Phakding- Namche ( 3438m. ) : 5 – 6 hrs

The trail passes through pine forest and continue on the trail that goes north up the Benkar Valley. Then we cross Dudh Koshi River and pass Chumoa and Monjo village before reaching the entrance of Everest National Park. After crossing a suspension bridge, we pass Jorsale village and walk alongside of the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi rivers. We ascend on a steep trail and reach Namche Bazaar which is probably the biggest town in the Everest region. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

Day 05: Acclimatization day

Namche Bazaar  is the primary town of the Everest or Khumbu region which has government offices, ATMs, internet cafes, shops, restaurants, and a colorful market. We can hike-up to Sagarmatha National Park and enjoy the sunrise over the Himalayas including Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kongde and so on. If we are interested in a day hike, we can trek to Khumjung village. Today we also visit the Hillary School.  Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

Day 06: Namche – Tengboche (3870m.): 5- 6 hrs

In the beginning  the trail untill Phunki is easy walk then ascend to Tengboche village , where the famous Tengboche monastery lies . This is the biggest monastery of the Everest region and located within the Sagarmatha National Park which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monastery is blessed with panoramic views of the Himalayas, including Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku. The Tengboche Monastery opens at 3:00pm, so if we reach there by 3 o’clock we can observe a Buddhist religious ceremony. Overnight in Tengboche.

Day 07: Tengboche – Dingboche (4360m.): 5-6 hrs

The  trail descends and passes through lush forests of birch, confer and rhododendron trees. While trekking we can admire good views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. We walk downhill to Debuche and cross the Imja River to reach Pangboche. We choose the upper Pangboche trail and admire the Himalayan vista and the Pangboche Monastery. We continue our walk to the Imja Valley and Lobuche River before ascending to Dingboche. It is a picturesque village with beautiful barley, potato and buckwheat fields complete with grazing animals dotted along those fields.

Day 08: Dingboche - Acclimatization

Spending a day in Dingboche will help us to acclimate to the high altitude. Instead of staying idle, we climb a ridge located behind the village and see six of the world’s tallest peaks including Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu. Furthermore, we can also admire Cholatse and Taboche peaks. On our north-west we see more Himalayan peaks rising above the Khumbu Khola Valley. Among those peaks, Lobuche West, Lobuche East and Lhotse are the most dominant. From another location on the ridge we can also admire the picturesque Imja Khola Valley and the beautiful Dingboche village. Overnight at Dingboche.

Day 09: Dingboche – Duglha ( 4600m. ) : 3-4 hrs

It is relatively short trek from Dingboche to Duglha . It is a relatively short journey from Dinboche to Duglha. We trek across a wide pass which is a much wanted change from walking in a straight line.  Around the beginning of our trek today we enjoy the company of the mighty Himalayas on all sides. The valley begins to narrow as we come closer to Dusa. We pass the campsite of the first successful Everest Expedition in 1953. We begin to see Mt. Pumori as we continue on our trail. As our trail descends and curves, we bid goodbye to Mt. Pumori. We cross a stream and ascend to Duglha which is a tiny village with a huge strand of prayer flags hung across the valley. After reaching Duglha, we can walk for 45 minutes to an hour and visit the Memorial Shrine. Overnight in Duglha.

Day 10: Duglha – Lobuche (4940m.): 3-4 hrs

The trail from duglha ascends to the steep terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. The trail passes through boulder-strewn slopes as we ascend Chupki Lhara which is a ridge that provides spectacular mountain views. The top of the ridge is filled with prayer flags and stones which are memorial shrines for climbers who lost their lives on Mt. Everest. As the trail drops to the Khumbu Glacier moraine, we find ourselves facing several great peaks including Khumbutse, Lingtren, Pumori and Mahalangur Himal.. Overnight in Lobuche .

Day 11: Lobuche – Gorakshep(5170m.) with Everest base camp ( 5364m. ) : 6-7 hrs

The trail to Everest base camp is not so difficult but passes several ascend and descend on a glacier path. There is also a lot of meandering on rough terrains. As we reach the base camp, we enjoy the incredible melt patterns and admire the gently rounded ice towers on the upper part of the Khumbu glacier. The Everest Base Camp is stunningly beautiful. We can enjoy amazing views of Nuptse, Khumbuste and Pumori mountains from the base camp. After soaking in the beauty, we walk back towards Gorak Shep where we spend the night.

Day 12: Gorakshep – Kalapatthar( 5545m.)-Pheriche (4288m.): 7-8 hrs

We wake up early for the walk up to Kala Patthar. It is dark outside with cold temperature and most likely chilly winds.  We walk on a fairly steep trail at a comfortable pace. As we are climbing up the hill we can see Lingtren, Khumbutse, and Changtse mountains. The view from the summit is outstanding. We can see the world’s tallest mountain Everest along other mighty Himalayan peaks. After spending some time at the summit of Kala Patthar, we walk back to Gorak Shep which is relatively easier than hiking up to Kala Pathhar.

Trekkers who visit the Everest Base Camp today will have an early breakfast as the hike up to the Everest base camp takes longer than the hike to Kala Patthar. After returning to Gorak Shep, both the groups will have lunch together. After lunch we descend to Pheriche to spend the night. Overnight in Pheriche.

Day 13: Pheriche- Namche (3410m.): 6-7

We will lose approx. 800m in elevation today and walk on a trail with a lot of ups and downs. We descend through a hillside filled with rhododendron and juniper trees and cross a bridge over the Dudh Koshi River. We descend rapidly through pine forest where we can easily spot mountains goats, pheasants and other wild animals and birds common to the area. The path eventually reaches Sansa from where we can enjoy views of Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Nuptse mountains. We walk on winding trails followed by another walk through a forest before reaching Namche Bazaar. Overnight in Namche .

Day 14: Namche – Lukla ( 2800m. ): 6-7 hrs

Today the trails begin on a rocky terrain to Lukla.  It is mostly a downhill trek on a trail alongside the Dudh Koshi River. We cross several suspension bridges, pass by several monasteries and villages before reaching Lukla.  We spend rest of the day in Lukla taking rest as today will be our last day on the mountains. Overnight in Lukla.

Day 15: Fly to Kathmandu

We catch an early morning flight to Kathmandu after a long mountain journey. In we can take a rest or do some souvenir shopping. If we want to explore any other areas of Kathmandu, we may do that today. Our guides can help you with both souvenirs shopping or sightseeing. There will be a farewell dinner in the evening to celebrate the successful completion of our journey. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 16: Final Departure

The whole trip of our Nepal’s adventure ends today. A representative of Sisne Rover Trekking  will drop us off at the Tribhuwan International Airport  three hours before  the scheduled flight.

Everest Base Camp Trek is a great introductory trek for those travelers who wish to reach the base camp of Mount Everest in a short period of time. The trek holds a variety of routes, which can be tailored to suit your schedule. Your adventure can last anywhere from a week up to a month. The trekker traverses deep canyons and tall ridges ascending a total of 8,848m (the height of Everest itself).Trekkers that are physically fit, in good health, and have trekking experiences can make this 14 days Mt. Everest Base Camp Trek. But, if you are a novice trekker who is in good health and average physical fitness, Everest Base Camp Trek – 16 Days might be right for you. For experienced trekkers who wish to take up more challenge and “stay off the beaten path, then Everest Base Camp Trek via Gokyo Lakes – 18 Days would be an ideal choice.  If you allow the time to ascend at your own pace this trek is open to the moderately fit. It is also possible to trek in winter but be prepared for the cold.

Important Note: 

Your safety is of paramount concern while traveling with Sisne Rover. Please note that your leader has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the itinerary if it is deemed necessary due to safety concerns. Every effort will be made to keep to the above itinerary; however, since this adventure entails traveling in remote mountainous regions, we cannot guarantee that we will not deviate from it. Weather conditions, health condition of a group member, unexpected natural disasters, etc., can all contribute to changes in the itinerary. The leader will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but please be prepared to be flexible if required.

Accommodations

We will be staying in 3 star level hotel/resort in Kathmandu and teahouses during the trek.  All accommodations are on twin-shared basis. Single supplement will be served on request with additional cost. We will have rooms with attached washrooms in most parts of the trek but this is not possible in a few remote locations. Also understand that single rooms are not easily available in higher elevations like they are in Kathmandu and the lower elevation regions.

Meals

All meals will be provided during trekking while only breakfast will be available in Kathmandu. There will also be a farewell dinner for guests. The most common cuisines in most menus will be Nepalese, Tibetan, Indian and the more common continental.

Porter Care

Sisne Rover is firmly committed to porter rights. We make sure that all our porters are well treated and well paid. Furthermore, Sisne Rover also provides the required level of shelter, clothing and footwear that these harsh environments demand. Porters who become sick are treated with the same care and attention as other team members. We have previously used helicopters at company’s expense to rescue porters from dangerous situations. And for the porter’s sake, all trekkers keep the weight of their luggage under 15kgs/33 pounds. We also support the work of International Porter Protection Group (IPPG), making our resources available to them to help improve the working conditions of the porters.

Environmental Concerns

The Everest Region is stunningly beautiful, but equally fragile. Future generations have just as much of a right to appreciate it as we do and so the tourism industry has an obligation to protect and preserve it. Sisne Rover employs a ‘zero impact’ policy on the natural environment and the traditional communities that live there. Sisne Rover, therefore, enforces a number of do’s and don’ts. Sisne Rover’s experienced staff can advise us on how to minimize our impact on the local environment.

Acclimatization

Like all Sisne Rover’s itineraries, the Everest Trek is also planned to curb Acute Mountain Sickness which is very common during high altitude trekking. We ascend gradually so that we have optimum time to acclimatize to the high altitude environment. Trekkers with known heart, lung or blood diseases are required to consult their doctors before booking the trek.

Physical Condition & Experience Requirements

Everest base camp trek is a moderate trek and suitable for passionate walkers who have the ability to walk at least 6-7 hours a day in average with a light rucksack. In some days we might even need to walk 8 to 9 hours. Walking in higher altitude is more physically demanding than walking in the lower altitudes; however, if we are in excellent health with average physical fitness, positive attitude, self confidence and strong determination, we can accomplish this trek successfully. Exercising and jogging regularly for a few months prior to the trip is a good idea as it will enhance our strength and stability. Previous hiking experience is preferred but no technical skill is required

Trekkers with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, and blood diseases should inform us before booking the trek. We also recommend that you consult your doctor(s) before the trip.

Best Time to Travel Everest Trek

Autumn (October. to Nov.) and spring (March to May) are the best seasons for this trek. The weather is sunny and warm with outstanding views

Brief Cultural Considerations

The challenge for you as a visitor to Nepal is to respect the rights and beliefs of the local people and to minimize your impact, both culturally and environmentally. We can all play a part in this by simply being aware of our actions and how they will affect the environment around us. Consider before you buy any sacred relics or endangered animals and take your rubbish with you.

 Please consider the following when trekking:

Dress appropriately: more is better. Revealing clothing in the mountain villages is not suitable, especially for women. T-shirts and trousers/long skirt are the recommended dress, but long shorts are also acceptable. Demonstrating an effort to be sensitive to their culture will enhance your experience with the Nepalese people.

Don’t encourage begging: don’t hand pens, money or sweets directly to the children. This does not only encourage begging, but also causes much conflict amongst the children. You’d rather hand your gifts or pens to a school that will distribute them amongst the children.

Smile: easy to give, wonderful to receive. A smile surpasses all cultural boundaries.

Tip: remove your shoes before entering a Nepali home.

Water

Water purification tablets or a good water filter will save you a lot of money and avoids even more unnecessary plastic in our environment. Iodine pills are very convenient for trekking .One pill will purify 1 liter of water in 20-30 minutes. They are available in Nepal. Gatorade can be a healthy and delicious item to add to your water. Vitamin C (absorbic acid) or Tang powder in different flavors will remove the unpleasant taste of iodine.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness, also known as AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness), is caused by a lack of oxygen at high altitudes (normally above 3,500m, but some may be affected at 3,000m). It occurs as a result of our bodies’ inability to adapt to a sudden increase in altitude. If given time, our bodies will adjust and a gradual ascent will decrease the possibility of altitude sickness.

How to prevent AMS
Go slowly, drink a lot of water and pay attention to the sensations of your body. If symptoms occur, you have climbed too far for the day. Resting at the same altitude will give you time to acclimatize and usually relieve mild symptoms.  Mild symptoms include: headache, nausea, loss of appetite, mild shortness of breath with minimal exertion, difficulty sleeping, dizziness or light headedness, mild weakness, fatigue, a general unwell feeling. More serious symptoms include: inability to recover from shortness of breath with rest, severe persistent headache, low urine output, vomiting, confusion, delirium, loss of coordination.  These require immediate descent as acclimatization will not take place at the same altitude. The best way to avoid AMS is to walk slowly, carry a light pack and just take it easy. Allow your body the time it needs to acclimatize.

What to bring

Nepal is a mountainous tropical country, which means there are climate extremes. Night and day temperature differences can vary between -10°C on the high treks and 30°C on the lower ones (14°F to 86°F), so you need to bring a variety of clothes.

This list is a guideline to help you pack for your adventure. Also understand that the items listed below will vary a little according to the season and the trek duration. The weight limit for your luggage is 33 pounds or 15 kg. Remember that your luggage will be carried by your trekking but you are required to carry a day-pack (with your valuables or anything important) on your own. We also suggest that you pack only what is necessary.

Important documents and items

  • Valid passport, 2 extra passport size photos, airline tickets
  • Separate photocopies of passport, visa form (easily obtained at Kathmandu airport), proof of insurance
  • Dollars, pounds or Euros in cash for purchasing Nepalese visa at Kathmandu airport, for paying for restaurants and hotels, for gratuities, snacks, and to purchase your own drinks and gifts
  • Credit cards, Bank/ATM/Cash machine cards for withdrawing funds from cash machines (bring a photocopy of your cards), traveler’s checks, etc.

Head

  • Head scarf, also useful for dusty conditions
  • Warm hat that covers your ears (wool or synthetic)
  • Headlamp with extra batteries and bulbs

Everest Base camp is a must do for any trekker who wants to feel the magnum experience of Mt everest. 16 days is a complete package for Kathmandu sightseeing and trekking in the mountains. The flight from Kathmandu -Lukla – Kathmandu was another adventure added to the list. Completely thrilling experience. We just loved this trip.
