Tourist Places in Sikkim

  1. Gangtok is the most important town and the capital of the state and located in the east district of Sikkim. It lies on a ridge with fine views of the Kanchenjunga. This is the most common tourist destination for Sikkim. You can easily spend 2 to 3 days sightseeing around Gangtok. If you intend to travel to North Sikkim, you must spend two nights in Gangtok on your way and back.
  2. Pelling is the second most popular tourist destination. It is the original capital of Sikkim and ruins of the erstwhile capital is still well preserved. Pelling also offers excellent views of the Kanchenjunga range of mountain.
  3. North Sikkim offers natural beauty at its best. Lachen and Lachung are the two main tourist towns of North Sikkim; Lachen acting as a base for trip to Gurudongmar and Lachung as the base for visiting the Yumthang valley area.

Permits and entry rules

Indian tourists do not require any permit to enter into Sikkim. However some of the tourist destinations are known as ‘Restricted Area’ and Indian tourists also require permit to visit these places. These places include Nathula – Tsongo Lake – Zuluk – Memenchu area in East, entire North Sikkim, Dzongri – Goechala area in West Sikkim etc.

Foreign visitors must first get tourist permit before entering into Sikkim. This Inner Line Permit (ILP) is issued at a number of places but most tourists collect it on arrival at Siliguri or at entry check post. Double check your ILP details with our executive if you are travelling during a holiday or arriving late in the evening as the issuing offices does not remain open 24 hours.

Visa Regulation:
One moth visa for Sikkim & Darjeeling can be obtained from any Indian Embassy or Consulate abroad. The Sikkim permit with Indian visa can also be obtained in Kathmandu, Nepal within one day with a condition that the client should be available in Kathmandu, Nepal visa can be obtained at the airport upon arrival.

Best Season:
February – May and October – December

(Spring Feb/Mar/April 20 C – 25 C. Summer May/June/July 23C. – 29 C. Autumn Aug/Sep/October 16 C. -28 C. Winter Nov/Dec/January 07 C. – 14 C. (Above temperatures are based on day ones)

In general, heavy woolen wears are required in winter. However, a warm Jumper & a jacket are always advised due to the unpredictable nature of the weather.

One sturdy rucksack or duffel bag, pullover, hiking/ walking shoes with rubber sole, cap, gloves, woolen balaclava (monkey-cap), torch, general clothing (emphasis on travelling light), sun-glasses, sun screen lotion are in general.

Sisne Rover Trekking (P.) Ltd shall always put its all efforts in making your journey smooth and pleasant. However, be responsible for any charge of cancellation of programs due to any unavoidable circumstances such as road blockade, flood, and snow, and unrest, cancellation of flight, delay arrivals, sickness or accidents. Any extra cost incurring there of shall be borne by the clients. So, it is most advisable that clients to have full insurance against medical and personal accidents. Cancellation insurance is also highly recommended.

Physical fitness and experiences
The highest point in this tour will be Yumthang Valley & Tsangu Lake (12,400ft). Those with breathing problems or lung problems and heart problems are advised to consult their family physician before undertaking this tour. Meals on the tour (as applicable) is both Veg/non-Veg and stress is on warm, wholesome food. Medical facilities are basic in the interiors outside of Gangtok.

Day 01: Fly KTM- Biratnagar and drive to Gangtok: 6hrs

On arrival in Biratnagar, we drive to Gangtok through passing lush green vegetation adjacent to river Teesta that flows in a vibrant current. Overnight in hotel.


Day 02: Full day excursion

Excursion around Gangtok including Rumtek Monastery, Flower show, Hanuman Tok, Institute of Tibetology, Tashiview Point, Chorten Stupa. Overnight in Gangtok


Day 03: Day trip to Tsongo-Babamandir/Nathula Pass

Tsongo Lake, Babamandir and Nathula are situated in high altitude area. Tsongo Lake is an alpine lake with lots of rainbow trout though it is a sacred lake of Sikkim. Gangtok to Tsongo and Baba Mandir drive is one of the most interesting as it provides an altitudinal changes along with the vegetation changes. During winter the region is full of snow. Nathula is opened for visitors on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Overnight in Gangtok.


Day 04: Drive: Gangtok - Pelling

Pelling is a new tourist destination and it provides excellent view of Kanchendzonga range. Khechuperi Lake which is about 13km from Pelling is yet another sacred lake of Sikkim. It is believed that once you visit the Lake and wish in your mind will be fulfilled. The Lake is in the shape of a Buddha’s foot and all around rich forest cover, guards the habitats. Lake provides shelter to large number of birds.


Day 05: Tour around Pelling including Rabdentse ruins

Pemayangtse Monastery. Rabdentse palace ruins are covered with thick forest. It was the second capital of Sikkim before shifting to Tumlong later to Gangtok. Pemayangtse monastery is the premier monastery of Sikkim. View of mount Kanchendzonga is at its best.


Day 06: Drive: Pelling – Darjeeling. Half day sightseeing in Darjeeling.


Day 07: Early morning visit Tiger hil

Early morning visit Tiger hill for sunrise and later on visit remaining tourist spots including Zoo and Himalayan Mountaineering Institute.


Day 08: Drive: Darjeeling - Bhadrapur via Pashupatinagar

Fly or drive all the way to next destination.

What to bring

Sikkim is a mountainous tropical country, which means there are climate extremes. Night and day temperature differences can vary between 16°C to 28°C except in the winter season. So you need to bring a variety of clothes.

This list is a guideline to help you pack for your adventure. Also understand that the items listed below will vary a little according to the season and the duration. We also suggest that you pack only what is necessary.

Important documents and items

  • Valid passport, 2 extra passport size photos
  • Separate photocopies of passport, proof of insurance
  • Cash money for paying for restaurants and hotels, for gratuities, snacks, and to purchase your own drinks and gifts
  • Credit cards, Bank/ATM/Cash machine cards for withdrawing funds from cash machines (bring a photocopy of your cards).

Gear and clothing

  • Sturdy shoes which gives a good support to your ankles. Preferable are the higher models with a good profile sole.
  • Lightweight shoes or sandals for changing into at night
  • Socks: 2-3 pairs outer socks and 1 pair for night time
  • Loose cotton trousers
  • T-shirts, long sleeved shirts
  • Cozy shirt for the evenings
  • Thermal underclothes are a necessity
  • Warm lightweight sweater or fleece
  • Hat (sun and night), gloves or mittens, scarf
  • Lightweight wind jacket
  • Umbrella
  • Rain cover for your Day backpack
  • Day pack with good waist and chest belt
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and chap stick
  • Quick dry towel
  • Flash light and power cuts, spare batteries
  • Moisture cream for your skin and lips (we recommend factor 30)
  • Water bottle with carry strap
  • Water purification: filter or iodine
  • First aid kit and medicine
  • Camera, spare batteries film if needed
