Chitwan National Park

Chitwan National Park is a famous wildlife-viewing national park in Nepal. In the jungles, grasslands, and wetlands extending over 953 sq. km you can encounter more than 544 species of birds and wild animals living their untamed lives. Indulge in high-end jungle safaris like canoe rides, jungle walks, wildlife tracking, and jeep safari. Also, take part in ethical elephant experiences as an alternative to elephant rides. The ethical experiences include walking alongside the elephants and visiting them at their chain-free corrals and elephant sundowners.

Best time to visit Chitwan

The best time to visit Chitwan is October to March. This is because the skies are clear, the temperatures are warm and comfortable and prices are good. The best time to see animals on a safari in Chitwan national park would be around January to March. But you’ve still got a chance to see animals at other months too!

Things to do in Chitwan

1. Jungle Walk
  • The main attraction in Chitwan and the reason everyone goes is for Chitwan National Safari Park. It’s very large and provides opportunities for seeing several wild animals like, tigers, leopards, rhinos, deers elephants etc.
  • One of the activities you can undertake in the park are walks. These walks can be as short as half a day, to a couple of days “trekking”.
2. Jeep Safari
  • If you don’t fancy walking in the heat, then you can opt for a traditional jeep safari which is the best way to explore the Chitwan National Park and witness the wild animals.
  • These are available in half day and full day options.
3. Elephant Bath
  • Elephant bathing is a popular activity in Chitwan and lots of people do it.You’ll get to watch while the elephants entertain themselves during their favorite activity: cooling down and feeling weightless in the water. Keep in mind that the water is too cold for the elephants in December and January, but otherwise this activity is available from February through to November.
4. Canoe Trip
  • Another fun activity to do is traditional canoe trip. Experience the jungle by floating down its rivers both on the Narayani and Rapti rivers being a popular choice for this. You can spot crocodiles, birdlife, and maybe the endangered fish-eating Gharial crocodile and its more sinister relative, the marsh-mugger. You can also stop along the riverbanks and take a short jungle walk. You’ll sit inside a hand-carved wooden canoe and will be accompanied by a local guide and driver.
5. Bird Watching
  • Bird watching is a popular activity in Chitwan.Chitwan is the home for more than five hundred  and forty species of birds. Join a bird watching tour to identify species from grassland, farmland, forest and aquatic habitats. You’ll learn to recognize different species, their whistles, and alarm calls as well as develop an insight into how birds are an integral part of Nepal’s abundant eco-systems.
6. Village Tour
  • The village tour is famous for close and personal observation of the Tharu culture that helps to witness the daily lifestyle and activities of the Tharu community. The Tharu community residealong the entire length of the Terai plains of Nepal but Chitwan is especially popular for their traditional culture.
  • For centuries, the Tharu have lived very closed to this protected area and hence their tradition reflects their intimate relationship with the natural world.
