Gosaikunda Lake, a revered alpine freshwater body at 4,360 m, is a significant pilgrimage destination in Nepal, drawing thousands of devotees during festivals like Gangadashahara and Janai Purnima. Beyond its religious importance, the Gosaikunda trek offers an enriching experience through Sherpa and Tamang villages, showcasing the majestic Langtang mountain range and diverse flora, including rhododendron, bamboo, and pine forests.

Description

Gosaikunda Trek 

The Gosaikunda lake is an alpine freshwater and the area has been describing as a religious site. The lake is located at an altitude of 4360m, considered as one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Nepal. Thousands of pilgrims from Nepal and India visit Gosaikunda during Gangadashahara and Janai Purnima festivals. Hence, Gosaikunda is not only for adventure seekers but also the religious signiticance in Langtang region.

Gosaikunda trek is also rich with its beautiful nature and culture. The trail passes through wonderful Sherpa and Tamang Villages accompanied with the magnificent views of Langtang mountain Range and the Rhododendron, bamboo, & pine forest which habitats lots of wildlife. During our first ascend of Gosaikunda trek; we will pass through a lush green forest, hanging bridge and a pavement of stone-concrete until we reach the Sin Gompa (3250m). There is an old cheese factory in Sing Gompa which sells the best yak cheese in Nepal.

Gosaikunda trek then continues to the Gosaikunda with dynamic views of Langtang Lirung (7,227m), Ganesh Himal range (7,406m), Himal Chuli (7,893m), Manaslu range (8,156mm) and Tibetan peaks. On clear days, we could also see Annapurna rising far behind the mountains. And finally, we will reach the Gosaikunda Lakes which is the major destination of this trek. The shimmering lakes will melt our heart as a blessing of Lord Shiva. However, this lake is totally frozen in winter which we suggest you not to walk over the holy lake. And finally, we will descend down the previous villages on the way back to Kathmandu.

Trek itinerary

Day 01. Drive from Kathmandu (1,350 m) to Dhunche (2,030 m): (7-8 Hrs.)

We start our journey early in the morning and drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche by bus which takes about 7 to 8 hour drive. We head north out of Kathmandu driving through scenic foothills and ridgeline vistas to Dhunche. While passing along the road on the bank of Trishuli River we catch a glimpse of Ganesh Himal, terraces and green hills. As we pass through Dhunche we feel as if we are heading towards deep land.

Please note that the first part of our drive up to Trishuli Bazaar is quite smooth. The path then moves along the gravel road. During the rainy season, the way is sometime blocked due to landslides.

Day 02. Trek from Dhunche to Sin Gompa (3,250 m): (5-6 Hrs.)

The second day of our trip starts after the breakfast in Dhunche, with a short walk through a forest. The path goes over a hanging bridge (1950m) to other side of the river. The trail after passing a loge, the climb gets very steep on stone-concrete steps, which later disappear and one walks up on a standard mountain path. The wood changes into bushes and small trees. The trail becomes again steeper after Deurali (2625m. and goes through forest then reaches to military camp at Dhimsa (3000m).The path remains surrounded by wood, and on steep trail reaches at small lodge (3070m), then leaves the forest and traverses up to Singh Gompa( Chandanbari) at 3230m. Overnight in a lodge.

Day 03. Trek from Sin Gompa to Lauribina (3,920 m): (4 Hrs.)

Today is our short day trek. So having short visits around Chandanbari, and the Cheese factory, we will take leisurely breakfast. The trail from Sin Gompa, gradually climb to the ridge through the rhododendron forest with dry scrub vegetation on the slopes. After one and half an hour pleasant walking, we will be at Cholangpati (3584m.), from where we will enjoy the view of Ganesh Himal and Langtang mountains.

The trail after the Chalangpati enters to Gosaikunda Protected area where killing the animals and cut the trees are not allowed. Approximately 2 hours steep climb; we will be in Laurebina at 3920m. Lauribina is a place from where we can observe sun set and sun rise & spectacular mountain views including Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang Lirung and Tibetan Mountains. Overnight in Lauribina in tea house.

Day 04. Trek from Lauribina to Gosaikunda (4,380 m) then to Lauribina (3,920 m): (6-7 Hrs.)

Enjoy the sunrise and the amazing mountain views with a hot cup of coffee. As per our today’s plan, we have to make round trip via Gosaikunda – the final destination. So after breakfast, we will start the trek ascending with a superb view of the mountains. The trail is icy often at the end of the November and December before sunrise in mountains. After one and half an hour walking we will reach a small temple – statue of the Sakyamuni (Lord Buddha). The trail again leads up and down about one and half an hour then we will see Saraswoti Kund and Bhairav Kund below the trail respectively. We might feel high altitude because of continue walking through the high elevation. The trail continues slightly climb to the Gosaikunda Lake tea houses at 4,460 m, where we will have our lunch. 

After lunch, we will explore Gosaikunda Area. There are many Kund (Lakes), which are known by the name of different Hindu gods and goddesses. Enjoy the view of Holy lake Gosaikunda. 

Then return to Lauribina via same trail. The trail continues down to the stream which is flow from Gosaikunda Lake. Overnight in Lauribina in a tea house.

Day 05. Trek from Lauribina to Dhunche (2,030 m): (5-6 Hrs.)

The trail from Lauribina gradually descends to Chandanbari where we will have our lunch. After lunch, we will descend steeply down to Dhunche. Overnight in Dhunche in a lodge.

Day 06. Drive from Dhunche to Kathmandu (1,350 m): (7-8 Hrs.)

We take early breakfast at the lodge. After packing baggage, we will drive back to Kathmandu in a bus. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, check in at your hotel.
Meals included: Breakfast, Farewell Dinner

To celebrate the successful completion of our journey, we will have farewell dinner and share the experiences about our trek.
