The Langtang Gosaikunda Trek offers a journey through the famed Valley of Glaciers to the sacred Gosainkunda Lake, situated at an altitude of 4380 meters. Pilgrims from both Hindu and Buddhist traditions gather annually, especially during the full moon day of August, believing that a bath in its waters absolves sins for the year.

Langtang Gosaikunda Trek 

Langtang Gosaikunda trek is another popular trekking route in Langtang region. In this trekking, we will get an opportunity to visit Langtang valley as well as Gosaikunda. Langtang and valley is famous as the valley of glaciers. Here we will get close up view of mountains named Langtang Lirung (7246 m.) visit glaciers, walking on grassy down and meadows.

The Gosainkunda is one of the holiest mountain lakes at an altitude of 4380 meters above sea level.Both Hindus and Buddhists pilgrims gather around this area every year especially on full moon day of August. They believe that if they take bath from the water of this lake they will be saved from their all sins done during that year. Both Hindus, as well as Buddhists, visit once in a lifetime in this lake. It takes abour 45 minutes to circumambulate things lake.

For this trekking. we have to take a morning drive from Kathmandu to Syabru Bensi (Around 8 hours). At first, we follow the route to Langtang valley and Kyanjin Gompa. And then we take half of the previous route which diverts us to the way to Gosaikunda Lake. After visiting Gosaikunda Lake we will trek back to Dhunche until the bus station and return to Kathmandu. Langtang Gosaikunda trekking is really worthy and fulfills our adventure appetite. In other words, the Langtang Gosaikunda trek is an unparalleled combination of natural beauty and the cultural richness.

Trek itinerary

Day 01. Drive from Kathmandu (1,350 m) to Syabru Besi (1,450 m): (7-8 Hrs.)

We start our journey early in the morning and drive from Kathmandu to Syabru Besi by bus which takes about 7 to 8 hour drive. We head north out of Kathmandu driving through scenic foothills and ridgeline vistas to Syabru Besi passing through Dhunche. While passing along the road on the bank of Trishuli River we catch a glimpse of Ganesh Himal, terraces and green hills. As we pass through Dhunche we feel as if we are heading towards deep land.

Please note that the first part of our drive up to Trishuli Bazaar is quite smooth. The path then moves along the gravel road. During the rainy season, the way is sometime blocked due to landslides.

Day 02. Trek from Syabru Besi to Lama Hotel (2,480 m): (5-6 Hrs.)

We traverse the ridge on Syabru Besi’s main road and soon reach Ghopcha Khola. Terraced fields and dense forest with a variety of plant species like oaks, maple, alder and bamboo open up. We may get to see yellow-throated martin, wild boar, Langur monkey, and red panda and Himalayan black bear en route. Further on, the trail crosses a stream and a bridge. We pass by several small Bhattis (tea shops). As we continue ascending steeply along the trail, we come across a steel suspension bridge at 2000 meters. The route further crosses to the north bank of the Langtang Khola amid the spectacular vistas of cascading waterfalls and opens into scrub oak forest. On reaching at Lama Hotel where we conclude the trek for the day. Overnight in a lodge.

Day 03. Trek from Lama Hotel to Langtang Village (3,541 m): (5-6 Hrs.)

From Lama Hotel, we continue the ascent above the Langtang Khola. As the trail progresses, it becomes steeper. We have the most exotic sights of Langtang Lirung lying at 7246 meter. The trail leads to a log bridge and on climbing further we come across lush meadows of Ghora Tabela at 3000m. We will see several lodges and a police check post. Further on, the route opens up into a wide valley of yak pastures and scattered Tamang villages with water-driven mills and prayer wheels. We arrive at Langtang village after crossing a stream and reaching up a height of 3500 meters. Langtang village is the headquarters for Langtang National Park and has flat-roofed Tibetan style houses, hotels and cultivated lands yielding buckwheat, potatoes, wheat, turnips, barley etc.

Day 04. Trek from Langtang Village to Kyangjin Gompa (3,900 m): (4-5 Hrs.)

After taking morning tea and breakfast, we get out of the village and pass on through yak pastures. Also pass the largest Mani wall in Nepal, made from stone with prayers written on them. The prayers written on the Mani wall is supposed to be blown away by the wind. Cross several of the wooden bridges. Since, we are really getting into the high altitudes; we might start feeling the thin air. Kyajing Gompa is surrounded by the Himalayas all around. We can take a walk around Kyanjin Gompa enjoying the views, glaciers, icefalls, birds and yaks. Overnight in a local lodge.

Day 05. Trek from Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel (2,480 m): (4-5 Hrs.)

After breakfast, we walk mostly downhill from Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel. The trail goes all the way downhill through forest following the river. Pass through the ethnic Tamang settlements that follow religious and cultural practices similar to the Tibetans. Overnight in a lodge.

Day 06. Trek from Lama Hotel to Thulo Syabru  (2,290 m): (5-6 Hrs.)

The trail from Lama hotel descend up to the Pairo  and then walking half an hours ahead, we will twist our trail uphill to Thulo Sybru. Climb until, we do not see a small tea house and water shop. Take a rest here and then move forward to one hour then we will be at  Thulo Sybru.

Day 07. Trek from Thulo Syabru to Lauribina (3,920 m): (5-6 Hrs.)

Follow  the steep uphill through Dursagang(2660m) and Phoparng Danda (3,190m).As we go higher, we feel cool climatic condition weather. Mostly during the trek, we will see Rhododendron, Spruce, Juniper trees and different species of birds.

The Trail gradually climbs to the ridge through the rhododendron forest with scrub vegetation on the slopes. As you reach to the Cholang Pati (3,650m). Take a rest and move forward one and half hours steep up to reach Lauribiina.

Day 08. Trek from Lauribina to Gosaikunda (4,380 m) then to Lauribina (3,920 m): (6-7 Hrs.)

Enjoy the sunrise and the amazing mountain views with a hot cup of coffee/tea. As per our today’s plan, we have to make round trip via Gosaikunda – the final destination. So after breakfast, we will start the trek ascending with a superb view of the mountains. The trail is icy often at the end of the November and December before sunrise in mountains. After one and half an hour walking we will reach a small temple – statue of the Sakyamuni (Lord Buddha). The trail again leads up and down about one and half an hour then we will see Saraswoti Kund and Bhairav Kund below the trail respectively. We might feel high altitude because of continue walking through the high elevation. The trail continues slightly climb to the Gosaikunda Lake tea houses at 4460m, where we will have our lunch. 

After lunch, we will explore Gosaikunda Area. There are many Kund (Lakes), which are known by the name of different Hindu gods and goddesses. Enjoy the view of Holy lake Gosaikunda.  Then return to Lauribina via same trail. The trail continues down to the stream which is flow from Gosaikunda Lake. Overnight in Lauribina in a tea house.

Day 09. Trek from Lauribina to Dhunche (2,030 m): (5-6 Hrs.)

The trail from Lauribina gradually descends to Chandanbari where we will have our lunch. After lunch, we will descend steeply down to Dhunche. Overnight in Dhunche in a lodge.

Day 10. Drive from Dhunche to Kathmandu (1,350 m): (7-8 Hrs.) We take early breakfast at the lodge. After packing baggage, we will drive back to Kathmandu in a bus. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, check in at your hotel.

To celebrate the successful completion of our journey, we will have farewell dinner and share the experiences about our trek.
